CTE CLASSES: AGRICULTURE
 

Advanced Ag Leadership
AKA:  Zero Hour

Available for Grades: 

10th—12th

Graduation Requirement: 

Occupational Education or Elective

Description: A great resume building class for  students interested in leadership and agriculture.  The class builds students resume with group dynamic training, parliamentary procedure law and debate, agricultural issues and communications, and speech.  Leaders will engage in written and oral communication, plus evaluation food science production and management. 

Note:  This class starts at 7:05 AM and ends at 8:00 AM. 

College Credit: Tech Prep College Credit available:  ENG 150, Vocational/Technical and Business Writing, 5 credits).  Credits provided through Grays Harbor Community College with successful completion of this course to any student receiving a “B” or better for 2 years.

Advanced Horticulture

Available for Grades:  11th & 12th

Graduation Requirement: 

Occupational Education or Elective

Description: The class incorporates horticulture business and marketing, plant propagation, floral design, plant identification and more.  Students are the managers of a productive greenhouse and flower shop that interacts with the community.

College Credit: Tech Prep College Credit available:  HORT 135 & HORT 169, (Horticulture Interiorscaping and Horticulture Business Management—6 credits total).  Credits provided through SPSCC with completion of a “B” or better.

 

Ag Mechanics Welding

Available for Grades: 9th—12th

Graduation Requirement: 

Occupational Education or Elective

Description: The highly hands on class covers occupationally related skills in metal fabrication techniques. Skills covered during 1st semester are arc welding, wire feed welding, plasma arc cutting, oxy-acetylene cutting and welding, and sheet metal fabrication. The second semester covers Stihl Bronze level training, advanced sheet metal fabrication, home/farm wiring, and advanced metal fabrication projects.

 

Advanced Ag Mechanics

Same as Ag Mechanics

Available for Grades: 10th-12th

Description: Prepares students for competition in Skills USA welding contest, welding fabrication contest, and leadership contests. Top students also compete in invitational welding competitions.

College Credit: Tech Prep College Credit available: WELD 101, Related Welding I, 6 credits). Credits provided through Grays Harbor College with successful completion of Advanced Ag Mechanics to any student receiving a “B” or better.

 

 

Ag Biology

Available for Grades:  10th-12th

Graduation Requirement: 

Lab Science, Occupational Education or Elective

Description: In this course, students study life science through the investigation of agriculture. Students explore all areas of biology including, the scientific method, ecology, biochemistry, biological classification systems, cells, plant sciences, and animal science. Leadership opportunities are also presented to help students build career skills.

 

Animal Biology

Available for Grades:  10th-12th

Graduation Requirement: 

Lab Science, Occupational Education or Elective

Description: Biologic principles in a hands on manner that uses animals as the main focus. Students learn about animal taxonomy, nutrition, health, reproduction, genetics, and species specific information. Students also participate in the Agri-Science Fair along with opportunities in FFA Career Development

Intro to Natural Resources

Available for Grades:  9th

Graduation Requirement: 

Occ. Education or Elective

Description: The introductory course is designed to help students understand the diversity of the dynamic field of agriculture and natural resources. Students dabble in the applied science of agriculture through investigating animal science, leadership, forestry, horticulture, wood and metal mechanics, communication, food science, and more.

 

Construction I, II, III

Available for Grades:  9th –12th

Graduation Requirement: 

Occupational Education or Elective

Description: Construction I—Students learn hands on technique in foundations, floor systems, framing, and basic drafting techniques. Additionally, electrical systems and green building components are explored. Students will complete an OSHA 10 hour training program and be prepared for LEED certification.

Construction II & III—Continue with hammer and nails to drive a valuable skill needed in the work force. This introduces knowledge of construction tools, materials, and techniques.  Construction competencies and skills are taught and applied through lab projects.  Skills in measuring, construction drawings, and construction applied through lab projects.  Also, construction math will be emphasized to prepare students for the world of work. Cabinet making skills, window & door installation, and roofing systems are added to this level.

 

Construction Math

Available for Grades:  11th

Graduation Requirement: 

Occ. Education or Elective

Description: This class functions in conjunction with Geometry to apply principles found in Math on the job site. Students build clocks, model framed/sheetrocked corners, foundation models, drafting projects and storage sheds. Students will also complete OSHA 10 hour training and will learn fine carpentry skills.

College Credit: Tech Prep College Credit available: CARP 121 (16 credits) upon three year completion of Construction &/or Construction Math.  These are provided through Grays Harbor College with successful completion of this class to any student receiving a “B” or better.

 

Environmental Biology

Available for Grades:  10th-12th

Graduation Requirement: 

Lab Science, Occupational Education or Elective

Description: This course will include: 1 quarter of basic concepts in Natural Resources, 1 quarter of Forestry Biology, 1 quarter of Fisheries/Aquaculture, and 1 quarter Wildlife Management. Students will also work with local hatcheries (commercial & government), timber companies, and Fish and Wildlife agencies.  Students will participate in Science Fair, Forstry, Natural Resources, Envirothon, and Logging Rodeos to hone their skills.

 

Leadership

Available for Grades:  10th-12th

Graduation Requirement: 

Occupational Education or Elective

Description:  Leadership includes the ASB and class officers along with other EHS students who want to develop and promote community spirit. The leaders peer coach elementary students twice a week.  They organize ASB events such as food bowl, homecoming, assemblies, and more.  Plus, self reflective leadership is developed along with committee work and  parliamentary procedure skills.

Forestry Technology &

Adv. Environmental Biology

Available for Grades: 11 & 12

Graduation Requirement: 

Occupational Education or Elective

Description: This class is a work base experience with time beyond the school day as work is needed.  Students work independently in the forestry industry learning environmental management, conservation techniques, and applied mathematics and recordkeeping.  Students have the opportunity to earn a wage while involved with this work experience program.  Christmas tree planting and trimming, reforestation, helicopter watch, and firewood sales are a few paid and non-paid work experiences.

College Credit:  Tech Prep College Credit available: NR 120, Natural Resources, (5 credits).  Credits are provided through Grays Harbor College with completion a “B” or better.

 

 

Plant Biology

Available for Grades:  10, 11 and 12

Graduation Requirement: 

Lab Science, Occupational Education, or Elective

Description:  Growing plants in the greenhouse and selling them to the public is one of the many opportunities in Botany/Plant Science.  Scientific investigation and inquiry are incorporated into plant production along with plant identification, plant propagation, and more.

College Credit:  Tech Prep College Credit available: HORT 100, General Horticulture, (5 credits).  Credits are provided through SPSCC with a “B” or better.
